ICCEM

The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM), in partnership with the Gender and Development—Child Development Center (GAD-CDC) of Central Luzon State University, conducted a seminar in celebration of Women’s Month and Fire Prevention Month at the CLSU Multi-Purpose Gym on March 23, 2023.

The activity was in celebration of National Women’s Month with the theme “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society” as well as the annual Fire Prevention Month celebrated every March which aims to raise awareness of the alarming increase in fire accidents. The faculty members and staff of the GAD-CDC attended the event together with their parents and students.

The opening ceremony kicked off with presentations from Prof. Janet O. Saturno, University Gender and Development Office (UGADO) Director and Head of GAD-CDC, and Ms. Loreta P. Sugue, GAD-CDC Assistant, who talked about the significance of Women’s Month and advocating for gender equality.

Mr. Edmark P. Bulaong, Instructor from ICCEM, shared his knowledge about fire prevention. He emphasized the importance of fire prevention in households and workplaces and how participants can achieve it through proper housekeeping, maintenance, and inspection.

Assoc. Prof. Roberto D. Pelayo, the Extension & Environmental Education Division Sub-unit Head of ICCEM, talked about the different types of earthquake hazards and how to prepare for an earthquake. He also demonstrated how to conduct an earthquake drill and highlighted the importance of having an emergency kit, and family emergency plans. He also stressed the importance of involving children in earthquake drills, as they need to know what to do when an earthquake strikes.

Mr. Pelayo conducted an earthquake drill, where participants practiced the “duck, cover, and hold” technique to protect themselves during an earthquake. In addition, Mr. Bulaong conducted a fire drill and practiced using a fire extinguisher to test the knowledge and skills of the participants, especially the GAD-CDC students, who bravely and actively participated.

Through this event, the participants gained valuable knowledge and skills that can help them prepare for potential disasters and were empowered to protect themselves and their families during emergencies. The ICCEM and GAD-CDC hope this event will inspire more people to take action in creating a safer and more equitable world.
