A total of 403 participants attended the 1st National Summit for the West Philippine Sea. The event was successfully held last August 2-4, 2023 at Midas Hotel, Pasay City with the theme: “Tugon ng Lokal at Sambayanan: Buhay at Kabuhayan Isang Pagsasama para sa Kanlurang Dagat ng Pilipinas”.
Dr. Shirly C. Serrano, IEG-CLSU Faculty representative acted as the activity’s facilitator. Meanwhile, Prof.
Roberto D. Pelayo and Ms. Kathrina M. Villar participated in the workshop activity as representatives for the science and technology/academe thematic area.
Representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of National Defense (DND), Tanggol Kalikasan (TK), Institute for Environmental Governance (IEG), Local Government Units (LGUs) along West Philippine Sea (WPS), Bureau of Fisheries Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Tourism (DOT), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), Palawan Council and Sustainable Development (PCSD), Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity Oceans and Landscape (SIBOL), various private & local organizations and IMPL Project Philippines joined forces for a common purpose, to save and protect the West Philippine Sea.
This National Summit aims to increase the awareness of the participants regarding the importance of protecting and participating in the management of our West Philippine Sea. Discussed during the event the importance of the natural resources in the WPS as well as the call to exercise sovereignty by strengthening the capacity of Local Governments involved.
The summit concludes with a gesture of solidarity through a commitment wall signing to protect WPS.
