Professionals in the field of biodiversity, policy makers, museum curators, private collectors, biodiversity researchers, taxonomy enthusiasts, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) convened for a conference to address sustainability challenges in Malaysia. The event was spearheaded by the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and held at UPM’s Faculty of Engineering in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia from February 28 to March 2, 2023.
The conference highlighted several issues and concerns, such as fragmented biological collections, inadequate storage facilities in collection centers, and low percentage of collections having digital records. To address such concerns, recommendations discussed include embracing digitization technology, focusing on research, education and heritage preservation, keeping inventing revenue streams, and sustainability.
Representatives from Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Dr. Lorenz J. Fajardo and Dr. Hazel Monica M. Peralta, had the chance to present the collections of The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management Museum (TIM) and zooplankton biodiversity research, respectively.
Furthermore, representatives from CLSU’s College of Fisheries (CF) and ICCEM had benchmarking and discussion with the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) on collaborations not only on biodiversity collections but generally in research and academic exchange. The CLSU team also visited the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS) at UPM to explore areas for collaboration.
