ICCEM

The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) in partnership with the Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC), College of Fisheries (CF), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) of the Science City of Muñoz organized a Training on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and First Aid on March 24, 2023, at FAC Conference Hall, Central Luzon State University, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.

Dr. Lorenz J. Fajardo, Head of ICCEM, Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon, Director of FAC, and Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Acting Dean of the College of Fisheries, led the event which aimed to educate attendees (FAC and ICCEM faculty, staff and interns, students from College of Fisheries and College of Engineering, and immersion students from Doña Juana Chioco National High School and Sto. Domingo National Trade School) on proper emergency response and management during calamities through basic life support training, fire safety, and earthquake drills.

SINSP Arnulfo A. Pol, the acting fire marshal of the Science City of Muñoz Fire Station, together with FO2 Mary Ann Monghaya and FO2 Vanessa Matias, generously shared their knowledge and expertise on fire safety as part of the observance of Fire Prevention Month 2023 with the theme “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi ka Nag-iisa”.

The resource speakers emphasized the importance of collective efforts toward fire safety through regular inspections and maintenance of fire safety equipment, performing fire drills, and having evacuation and escape plans.

The speaker also discussed practical tips on how to avoid common causes of fires, such as unplugging electrical appliances when not in use, never leaving cooking appliances unattended, and avoiding smoking indoors.
Mr. Roberto D. Pelayo, Extension and Environmental Education Division Sub-Unit Head of ICCEM, discussed earthquake safety measures before, during, and after an earthquake.

Mr. Pelayo also discussed the “e-balde” which contains things needed in case of emergency such as radio, flashlights, hygiene kit, medicine kit, important documents, and ready-to-eat food. This “e-balde” can also be used to protect one’s head from falling debris.
Meanwhile, Engr. Randy G. Baldedara, Office-in-Charge of LDRRMO, shared his knowledge and expertise on basic life support methods for disaster preparedness during emergencies.

Engr. Baldedara highlighted that knowing how to administer first aid accurately and as quickly as possible leads to the victim’s survival.
The partnership between CLSU, BFP, and LDRRMO underscores the importance of collaboration and cooperation in promoting disaster preparedness and resilience in the community.
