The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL), Bureau of Patents, has recently granted patent rights to esteemed inventors Dr. Annie Melinda Paz-Alberto and Dr. Ronaldo T. Alberto. Dr. Paz-Alberto is a former University Professor from the Department of Biological Sciences, formerly the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), now the College of Science (CoS), and also a former Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM). At the same time, Dr. Ronaldo T. Alberto is currently a Professor Emeritus at the Department of Crop Protection, College of Agriculture. They have been recognized for their groundbreaking invention, “A Method of Controlling Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Capsicum annuum L.) and a Botanical Pesticide Formulation on the Same.” This remarkable invention has emerged from the DOST-PCAARRD funded project, “Molecular Identification and Green Technology Development of High-Valued Plants in Central Luzon,” aimed at developing botanical pesticides to fight plant pathogens that cause diseases in economically important crops in Central Luzon with the collaborative efforts of researchers, including Ms. Myra U. Domingo, Mr. Arnel B. Celestino, Mr. Ronel B. Runes, and Mr. Rommel Karlo R. Dela Cruz. The formulated botanical pesticide was tested and proven to be effective against the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Xcv), which causes bacterial leaf spots of pepper. This accomplishment is poised to enrich the university’s intellectual property portfolio. Moreover, the recognition of Dr. Paz-Alberto and Dr. Ronaldo T. Alberto’s invention serves as a testament to their expertise and commitment to advancing scientific innovation. Photo by: CLSU Intellectual Property Office #ICCEMinAction #CLSU #IPOPHIL
