The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) recently hosted a captivating Cultural Discussion on Philippine Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation for the participants of the Fulbright-Hays Language Project on July 24, 2023 at ICCEM’s training room.
Dr. Shirly C. Serrano, led the discussion and captivated the students with her extensive knowledge and insights into the country’s rich natural heritage. She is renowned for her extensive research and exceptional contributions to the field of biodiversity and conservation. Her presence at the event brought excitement and anticipation among the Fulbright-Hays students.
The Cultural Discussion began with an introduction to the Philippines’ unique and diverse ecosystem, showcasing its extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna. Dr. Serrano eloquently elaborated on the significance of preserving this natural heritage and the challenges faced by the country in maintaining a delicate balance between development and conservation. As the discussion unfolded, the students were treated to inspiring anecdotes about local conservation heroes, indigenous practices, and community-based efforts to protect the environment. Dr. Serrano emphasized the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge and practices into modern conservation strategies to create a more sustainable future.
Mr. John Wayne A. Villen, Researcher from ICCEM and Mr. Ace Lorenz S. Bagsic, Intern from TSU, also presented their activities related to the discussion on biodiversity and environmental conservation. Mr. Villen discussed the environmental status at Zambales. While Mr. Bagsic shared his experiences in ICCEM including the Biodiversity assessment.
Dr. Serrano concluded the event by urging the participants to become ambassadors for Philippine conservation and to share their newfound knowledge and insights with their communities back in the United States. The Institute’s Cultural Discussion on Philippine Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation served as a powerful reminder of the interdependence of culture and nature. It showcased the significance of preserving traditional practices alongside implementing modern conservation strategies to ensure a harmonious coexistence between humans and the environment.
